A hydrodynamic analogy to the crack driving force

Students often have a tough time understanding the crack driving force in an elementary course on fracture mechanics.

A recent free access article has been published on a fluid analogy to the crack driving force and the Riabouchinsky free streamline problem for ideal fluid flow around two plates. Hopefully this analogy can aid in the visualization.

Work-Energy principle: Doubt regarding zero initial velocity assumption

I have a basic doubt from engineering mechanics. We have the work-energy principle stating that the work done by the forces acting on a partile is equal to the change in kinetic energy of that particle. However, the kinetic energy is a qudratic function of the velocity of the particle, and hence the change in kinetic energy for a given change in the velocity would depend on the initial velocity of the particle, before the work is done by the forces acting on it.

Residual Stress 101: One day course at SEM conference

The day before the SEM Conference this June in Reno, Nevada, USA, we will be teaching a short course entitled Residual Stress 101:https://sem.org/annualprogram. See below for a description of the course. We will cover lots of practical material on residual stresses, much of which is not covered in standard engineering curricula. This is great material for any interested researcher who never got a comprehensive background in residual stress. It will also be great for graduate students or advanced undergrads, and students pay half price.

I am struggling in understanding a theorem related to a conjugated polymer which is based on the electro-chemo-mechanical working principle.

The basic idea of the actuator is constructed from three layers, the up and bottom are conductive and the medium layer is dielectric and when the voltage applied the ions migrates to fill the holes.

It is mentioned that the expansion is happening because of the migration of the ions and then the stress occurs.

I don't agree with it as what makes the ions migrate is the electrostatic force and then the strain occurs.
