PhD Position in the BIOMEDICAL Engineering Department (CIMNE/Barcelona)

的objective of the position is to develop a PhD work on the subject “cardiovascular stent design and analysis”. The aim of the work will be to analyze the expansion of the stent and the contact with the artery to simulate thrombectomy technique. The developments will have to be carried out within the Kratos framework.

Advanced course on Coupled processes in fracture propagation in Geo-Materials: from hydraulic fracture to earthquakes

We are delightled to announce an advanced summer course on hydraulic fracture & earthquake mechanics which will be held at CISM (The international center for mechanical science) in Udine, Italy from June 10 to 14, 2019.

This summer course targets graduate students, engineers as well as researchers interested in recent advances in the mechanical modeling of both fluid-driven fractures and earthquakes.

orthotropic

hello all.

I work on the plates laminate orthotropic, in the calculation of the constatnte of rigidities I found two matrices of rigidity which are mantionent on the two figures following:

somebody can explain to me which is the matrix right, and thank you by advance.

PhD positions in mechanics of metamaterials at the University of Minnesota

PhD positions are available at the University of Minnesota in the group of Prof. Stefano Gonella. The positions are in the general area of mechanics and physics of solids and structures, with emphasis on mechanical metamaterials. Topics of current interest are:

1) Topological metamaterials;

2) Nonlinear waves in metamaterials and architected solids;

Two Fully-funded PhD Positions in Additive Manufacturing

The National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME) at Auburn University is announcing for two fully-funded PhD positions in the area of structural integrity of additive manufactured (AM) materials/parts. These students will work under direction of Dr. Shamsaei from Mechanical Engineering Department. These opportunities include;
1- One PhD student is expected to work on experimental and analytical mechanics, additive manufacturing, fatigue testing and modeling, failure analysis, microstructural characterization, and fracture mechanics.
2- The second PhD student will implement computational mechanics to investigate structural integrity of AM parts. The candidate for this position should have background on crystal plasticity and finite element analysis. This candidate is also expected to be familiar with a finite element software including writing subroutines.
For international applicants, you need to have your TOEFL and GRE scores ready to report by Oct. 15th. If interested, please send your resume and a cover letter, briefly explaining your relevant experience and publications to Dr Vaziri (mzv0045@auburn.edu).

Opening for two new Ph.D. students in the Computational Mechanics group, The University of Iowa.

The Computational Mechanics group at The University of Iowa, led by Professor S. Rahman, is looking for two new Ph.D. students, who are capable of and interested in performing high-quality research on uncertainty quantification and stochastic design optimization. The research, supported by U.S. National Science Foundation, requires building a solid mathematical foundation, devising efficient numerical algorithms, and developing practical computational tools, all associated with stochastic analysis and design of complex materials and structures.

Stress is defined as the quantity equal to ... what?

In introducing the very concept of the stress tensor to the beginning student, text-books always present only indirect relations involving the concept. Thus, you have the relations like "traction = (stress-transposed)(unit normal)" (i.e. Cauchy's formula, for uniform stress), or the relations for the coordinate transformations of the stress tensor, or the divergence theorem (for non-uniform stress). These are immediately followed or interspersed with alternative notations, and the rules for using them.

But what you never ever get to see, in text-books or references, is this: a *direct* definition of the stress tensor, i.e. an equation in which there is only the stress tensor on the left hand-side, and some expression involving some *other* quantities on right hand-side. Why? What possibly could be the conceptual and pedagogical advantages of giving a direct definition of this kind, and its physical meaning? I would like to ponder on these matters here, giving my answers to these and similar questions in the process.
