A free program to generate interface elements in an existing FE mesh

Hello all,

Last year when I started implementing interface elements to model material failure, I realized that the formulation is easy except how to generate a mesh with interface elements. I did a googling to search for such a free program. Amazingly, I did not find any although there are many researchers working on the fracture mechanics field.

So, I wrote a small object-oriented C++ program which reads a FE mesh, duplicates nodes and insert interface elements where asked. The program is able to

(1) insert 1D/2D interface elements everywhere in a FE mesh

Mechanics of Materials: Textbook Recommendation

I will be teaching a sophomore level class mechanics of materials class. The class will cover mechanics of basic strength of materials (e.g. beams, pressure vessels), but I also want to teach basic elements of failure mechanics (fracture, fatigue, plasticity, and wear.) I'm looking for a recommendation of an undergrad mechanics textbook that covers the fracture, fatigue, plasticity, and wear. The students will have had a statics and mechanics class and their textbook already covers strength of materials. Thanks.

Fracture of electrodes in lithium-ion batteries caused by fast charging

在充电或放电锂离子英航ttery, lithium is extracted from one electrode and inserted into the other. This extraction-insertion reaction causes the electrodes to deform. An electrode is often composed of small active particles in a matrix. If the battery is charged at a rate faster than lithium can homogenize in an active particle by diffusion, the inhomogeneous distribution of lithium results in stresses that may cause the particle to fracture. The distributions of lithium and stress in a LiCoO2 particle

ABAQUS (6.8, 6.9 EF) - Effect of the number of back stresses

Forums:

Since ABAQUS 6.8, a new feature has been added to the combined hardening
material input.

Let's assume a combined Kinematic and Isotropic hardening case, such as
those happen in metals.

"Half cycle" uni-axial test results has been utilized to model the yield
stress-plastic strain behavior as well as the Kinematic behavior of the
metals.

In the same user interface, there is an option to choose the number of
back stresses.

Is the number of 1 back stress is equivalen to the case of linear kinematic hardening (Ziegler's)?

Barenblatt's paper

I attach Barenblatt's paper which is difficult to access. The paper includes a milestone idea of the cohesive surface that allows us to get rid of unphysical singularities in the older formulations of fracture mechanics.

Subsea Integrity

I am teaching Subsea Integrity for the MSc students majoring in Subsea Engineering at the School of Engineering, University of Aberdeen. This is a course that combines the fundamental principles (corrosion, fracture, fatigue and material selection) with the industry applications (subsea integrity management and implementation, cathodic protection, case studies on subsea reliability and engineering assurance).

New idea in fatigue problems

there are two analytical concepts that are very important in fatigue failure.the first one is crack closure and the others is residual stress .the first one is in behind of crack and the other emphasis in the front of crack tip. the question is if we use some devices such as AFM/SEM is it possible we model the energy filed during fatigue process? if this idea can be investigated the second question can be asked: is there any similarity to model for different loading conditions?

I appreciate if you also put your comment in my idea?

Bes Regards,

Hydrostatic stress as Fracture/Damage criterion?

Hi all,

Can Hydrostatic stress be used as a fracture criteria? If so can critical hydrostatic stress be found experimentally? Thanks.
