2018 Thomas J.R. Hughes Young Investigator Awards – jointly to Professor Dennis Kochmann and Professor Liping Liu

The Executive Committee of the ASME Applied Mechanics Division is pleased to announce and congratulate bothProfessor Dennis Kochmann, Professor of Mechanics and Materials, ETH Zürich, andProfessor Liping Liu, Associate Professor of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, Rutgers University, as the joint recipients of the 2018Thomas J. R. Hughes Young Investigator Award.This award, which includes a medal, a plaque, and an honorarium, will be presented at the AMD Honors and Awards Banquet, tentatively scheduled on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, during the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, November 9-15, 2018.

The Young Investigator Award was established in 1998 and renamed the Thomas J.R. Hughes Young Investigator Award in 2008. The Award recognizes special achievements in Applied Mechanics for researchers under the age of 41.

Professor Kochmannreceived this award for the creative exploration and exploitation of material-level and dynamic instabilities in solids and structures through the development of new theory, advanced computational tools and models, and novel experimental techniques

Professor Liureceived this award for his contribution to the solution of the Eshelby conjecture, and the modeling and optimal design of multiphase multifunctional composites.
