job

I am hiring an Engineering Intern this year. The candidates are expected to be graduate students with solid training in mechanics and programming. The starting date is expected to be this summer, however, it can be also earlier. This opening does not sponsor visa application and the candidates should be currently enrolled in US universities and is expected to return to the same school after the internship. Please email your resume to jhzhao at apple.com.

Element type for modeling shear banding in 3D

Forums:

Dear all,

As I am modeling shear banding phenomena in 3D, I am confused on what element type I should adopt, since there are many versions in literature. In 2D simulation, some author suggests using quadrilaterals consists of 4 cross-triangular elements, while some other use 9 node quadrilaterals. In 3D, some author use 20 noded hexahedral while some other use 8 node hexahedral with 1 integration point.

Export Mass Matrices in Abaqus

Hello,

I have to export stiffness and mass matrices from Abaqus (dynamical simulation)

and I have been using the commands *Matrix Generate and *Matrix Output

I need to export the matrices for different instants of time (time intervals) and I have noticed that the entries

of the MASS matrices are not equal at different time points.

Is that correct or should the MASS matrices be constant for a dynamical simulation?

米any thanks

Composite Manufacturing Process Modeling Using Poromechanics

Modeling and simulation of manufacturing of advanced composite material is a must in today's industry as the use of advance composites is increasing dramatically. The aim is to reduce the number of trial and error by development of a simulation tool to model and predict the manufacturing fundamental phenomena happening simultaneously in different scales. Poromechanics is a multidisciplinary and multiphysics concept which can be used to achieve this goal.

Intern Opening at Apple

job

You will be working on stress simulation of electronic components and sensors with a group of brilliant minds here in Apple’s Headquarters. You are a graduate student with good academic standing majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics or similar engineering fields. You are a good programmer and familiar with Python. You must be authorized to work in US. The intern position is open immediately. Send your resume to Jeff Zhao (jhzhao at apple.com).

Deformation gradient change in Abaqus

Help needed!! in Abaqus

我有UMAT写入更新压力和材料tangent components for a user defined material model. I need stretch ratio as an input for my material model. For this I am using deformation gradient from UMAT. Problem is, when there is constant strain (strain rate = 0), for example when material stretched to 100% strain (rubber) and then held at that strain for certain time to see stress relaxation, the deformation gradient should give the same value of 100% strain, but to my surprise this is changing. Can any one help me with this.

What are the regular iteration steps of cohesive model based FEM for crack problems

Hi,

I'm now start to learn cohesive zone model based FEM for crack problems. According the a regular coehsize model (bilinear for example), the relative displacement and the cohesive stress are both unknwon, so iteration is required. My question is that what are the regular iteration steps?

Thanks.

Modeling of Particulate Composites

Forums:
Choose a channel featured in the header of iMechanica:

Hi

I am trying to model particulate composites and simulate their stress-strain response. The problem that I am facing is that the inclusions (stiffer than the matrix) are only acting as points of stress concentration. Consequently their is no strengthening and hence no apparent increase in load carrying capacity of the composite. Any help/suggestioin in this regard would be higly appreciated.

Abaqus: Composite delamination with cohesive elements

Hello,

I have to do a FEA regarding impact damage and delamination propagation in a CFRP specimen.

I have to do this using cohesive element in order to see the propagation of the delamination front in the material.

My problem is that I don't know how to do this in Abaqus.

I'll better explain: I can use this software but is the first time approching composite behavior and I really don't know how to model that.

Mesh free coupled with FEM

Forums:

Hi All

I would like to know , If part of our model has geometrical complexity , is it reasonable to use meshfree method for that area ? does it fasten or ease the analysis ? how to couple it with FEM ?

huge difference of Young's modulus in sandwich structure

I am modeling a plate under three point bending with Abaqus. The plate
is a sandwich structure with aluminum plate (thickness: 5mm), adhesive glue (thickness:
0.02mm) and a kind of foam (thickness: 15mm) bonding together. Their Young’s
米odulus is at the order of 100GPa, 1MPa and 100MPa. While in incremental
calculation, the job is always be aborted for not achieving convergence. I just
wonder whether the cause of not achieving convergence should be attributed to
the huge difference in Young’s modulus.

Method for Simulation of Universal Joint

Hello Everyone,

I have to simulate and find the pressure on the splines in the universal joint. I have to define contact surface and to find a simple method to run analysis on this joint. I am finding it very difficult to select all the surface on every spline. Also, it will make the simulation very big.

Could anyone please help me to find a method or an easy way out. Any kind of suggestions are most welcome.

The Dept of Eng Sci at Uppsala University is looking for a project worker in structural modeling of the 17th century Vasa Ship

job

The Swedish
17th century Vasa ship is unique in its kind and of high cultural
and historical interest. Therefore, interdisciplinary research teams are
constantly busy to keep the slowly degrading and deforming warship in good
geometrical shape. Initiated in 2012, the latest research project aims to
investigate creep in the Vasa ship and to develop a new support system for
improved dimensional stability. For this purpose a finite element model will be
created to assess the effect of varying geometrical parameters and material
properties. One of the key aspects is the influence of the joints of the ship

I want to know to do an FEM all frm scratch, how can I make or define geometry in Fortran.

I guess I know how to descretize and further processing but how can I make or define my sample for example(tensile sample) in fortran.

TSHR output problem

Dear colleagues,

I have one question concerning the TSHR (transverse shear stresses) output request in application of Thick Shell S8R elements in Abaqus/standard.

the follow qarning occurs:Output request tshr is not available when *transverse shear stiffness is specified on the *shell section definition or a material in the shell has been defined without *elastic

Can anybody please help with an advioce or two, on how to solve this?

all the best

Isogeometric Analysis (IGA)

The aim of this post is to give a brief introduction to the recently emerged isogeometric analysis (IGA) which was presented in the seminal paper " Hughes, T.J.R.; J.A. Cottrell, Y. Bazilevs (2005). "Isogeometric analysis: CAD, finite elements, NURBS,exact geometry and mesh refinement". Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Engrg. (Elsevier) 194: 4135–4195." IGA refers to a computational framework in which the basis functions used to represent the geometry in CAD are used for approximating the unknown fields in FEA. In this regard, IGA also employs the well known isoparametric concept.

Abaqus - warning message: c3d4h elements will enforce vol .... use *tie

Forums:

Dear iMechanica-User,

i habe a general question according to Abaqus. I'm dealing with an biom. model of the breast and i created the mesh with the toolbox iso2mesh (matlab) / c3d4h elements - each element has it's own youngs modulusand is therefore defined as singel solid section (per element), but all elements use the same node-list. Simulation is done by compression of the breast using two plates.

So here is the problem: i always get the warning message:
