Three-year Postdoc position to study the biophysics of aerial electroreception in arthropods

The post is funded for three years and is supported by a grant from the UK BBSRC. The project is entitled “The biophysics of aerial electroreception in arthropods” and seeks to elucidate the biophysical sensory mechanisms subtending electroreception in air.

As one of the two postdoctoral positions supported, the main responsibilities of this post will be to provide high-quality scientific expertise to help resolve current issues in the field of aerial electroreception. Assets will be the demonstrated experience in Mathematics or Physics and the capacity to develop own ideas on innovative investigations. For this post, the successful candidate will have a strong computational mathematics or physics background, including a track record in mathematical modelling, both analytical and computational (e.g., with a commercial package) and the demonstrated capacity to develop models (both analytical and computational) of complex systems. A key asset will be the capacity to identify and solve problems in electrostatics and application to mesoscale physics and biological systems, using empirical measurements, computer modelling and innovative characterisation methods. An important quality will be the capacity of working in both laboratory and field environments. The successful candidate will be expected to work in collaboration with the other postdoctoral researchers and other members of the sensory biophysics and bionanoscience research group.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in mathematics or physics or in a related field of engineering research and have completed their PhD studies and submitted their thesis. This position will be attractive to a highly motivated individual with a keen interest in science at the biology-physics interface.
