Recommended book to accompany ES 240
I recommend the book
“The Linearized Theory of Elasticity” by William S.
Slaughter
Here is a review of it from Amazon:
Chapter Outline:
1 Review of Mechanics of Materials
2 Mathematical Preliminaries
3 Kinematics
4 Forces and Stresses
5 Constitutive Equations
6 Linearized Elasticity Problems
7 Two-Dimensional Problems
8 Torsion of Noncircular Cylinders
9 Three-Dimensional Problems
10 Variational Methods
11 Complex Variable Methods
Appendix: General Curvilinear Coordinates
This book complements the class nicely as it takes the same
approach. It takes topics such as tensors, kinematics, or equilibrium,
describes them in detail, then shows how to apply the same concepts in
cylindrical coordinates. It takes ideas that cannot be covered in the limited
class time and explains them in detail. It devotes sections to ideas that might
be new to some people, such as the kronecker delta and explicitly states how it
is used.
One of the best things about this book is that it makes an
effort to use understandable and logical notation. There are no superfluous
derivations and mathematical expressions that would have otherwise confused me
more than help clarify concepts. It dwells on the fundamentals, making sure the
reader has a solid foundation on tensor notation and manipulation. It also uses
the same notation presented in all of my solid mechanics-related classes,
making it more easy to follow along with what is going on than other texts I’ve
seen.

Slaughter's book on solid mechanics
It is great that you likeWill Slaughter's book. He was a graduate student of Solid Mechanics at Harvard. It might not be a coincidence that you find his appraoch pleasant.
