The sources of noise in a vehicle are many, including the engine, driveline, tire contact patch and road surface, brakes, and wind to name a few. A Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) engineer is tasked with predicting these noises early in the design phase to make the necessary adjustments to ensure a harmonic ride, so to speak. The latest SIMULIA Tech Brief illustrates the effects that rolling tires have in contributing to NVH. The vibration characteristics of rolling tires are considerably different from those of stationary tires so it is necessary to predict the NVH response of a moving vehicle to correlate with real-world results. Realistic simulation allows for a greater understanding of how the interaction between a rolling tire and the road contribute to vehicle noise and vibration, enabling engineers to determine how different tire designs affect NVH and improve their designs.
