Sharing a book draft on the vibration analysis of quartz crystal resonators //m.limpotrade.com/node/16591 < div class = "字段field-name-taxonomy-vocabulary-6field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden">

In collaborations with industrial engineers on the design and analysis of quartz crystal plate resonators, which involves the high frequency vibrations of piezoelectric plates with Mindlin plate equations, we have to go through the details of plate equations for every stages in the analysis. In addition, complications and bias fields are also considered. We have put together our papers and written a draft of a book detailing essential equations and methods. We now share this draft with you if you would like to read some documents to know insights on this particular subject.

The file is in Chinese and we shall come up with an English version if there are enough interests.

Papers can be in Chinese or English
Advances in the research of the theory of Piezoelectricity and
Acoustic Waves have provided essential foundation and new opportunities
to device technology and have been fostering academic exchanges and
interaction in the piezoelectric device industry. With the increased
research activities in piezoelectricity and acoustic waves and recent
fast growth in piezoelectric devices, we are also facing many
technological challenges from real engineering applications and product
design and manufacturing. Following the successful SPAWDA 2004 in
Ningbo, 2006 in Hangzhou, 2008 in Nanjing, 2009 in Wuhan, Chinese
Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and the Acoustical Society
of China have decided, also with industrial support, to hold the
SPAWDA 2010 at Xiamen University, Xiamen, Fujian, China in December
10-13, 2010. The conference topics include, but not limited to,

  1. Theory of Piezoelectricity;
  2. Bulk and Surface Acoustic Waves
  3. Piezoelectric Devices(including MEMS/NEMS/Nano
    piezoelectric devices)
  4. Piezoelectric Materials (including micro- and nano-
    piezoelectric materials)
  5. Ultrasonics
  6. Manufacturing Technology of Piezoelectric Devices;
  7. Oscillators and Filters

We cordially invite researchers from universities and laboratories
to present their theoretical and experimental findings. We are also
interested in hearing from engineers and management of the piezoelectric
device industry to talk about new products and business trends, thus
creating the opportunities to promote the close cooperation between
research and product development. The conference proceedings will be
published by World Scientific for worldwide distribution. We also
invite our fellow researchers to organize focused sessions. The SPAWDA
2010 will encourage the participation of students by offering the
reduced registration fee.

An Introduction Course on Mechanics //m.limpotrade.com/node/2721 < div class = "字段field-name-taxonomy-vocabulary-6field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden">

We are currently offerring an introductory course on mechanics for junior students for all fields and subjects. It is a so called general knowledge course for students to know more on certain subjects and fields before a decision on choice of a major is made. Since the Mechanics Department in our University has not been popular for so long, we have decided to evangalize our field with more glorious history of Mechanics: Newton, Bernoulli, Euler, Clausius, Faraday, and Einstein.

I am planning to give students an indepth introduction about major breakthoughs in Mechanics with major players, basic principles, significance, and applications. Besides, may contribution to human civilization and modern engineering will also be emphasized. I will not deal with the derivation of equations and their solutions.

Since the course was announced last year, we got enthusiastic responses from students (in Mechanics scale:-). We shall have about 40 students, more than any Mechanics class I have taught.

Here are the major components of the class:

1. Newton and Gravity

2. Bernoulli and Fluid Mechanics

3. Clausius and Thermodynamics

4. Faraday and Electromagnetodynamics

5. Einstein and Relativity

I have been debating with myself if Quantum Mechanics should included, but I feel it does fall into the Mechanics categorey we are used to.

I am seeking your comments on the course we are trying to offer here at Ningbo University.

Professor Y. C. Fung is the recipient of the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ Prize of 2007 //m.limpotrade.com/node/2472 < div class = "字段field-name-taxonomy-vocabulary-6field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden">

Professor Y. C. Fung, Professor Emeritus of Bioengineering at UC San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering, is the recipient of the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ Prize of 2007.

The Russ Prize is presented biannually to an outstanding candidate in the field of bioengineering who has made significant contributions to improving the human condition through research, development, teaching, or management. The recipient receives a $500,000 cash award and an engraved gold medallion.

Medical News Today cites Prof. Fung as the "'father of modern biomechanics' for pioneering the application of quantitative and analytical engineering principles to the study of the human body and disease." His inventions have directly contributed to enhancing the recovery and functionality of injured soft tissue, and improving the effectiveness and longevity of prosthetic orthopedic devices. Today, a great many people who suffer from tissue trauma or burns benefit from his contribution to the development of artificial skin.

Prof. Fung joined UCSD to establish one of the first bioengineering programs in the country as early as 1966 and devoted himself to studying the mechanical aspects of the body after twenty years of making contributions in aeronautics.

He is a Distinguished Alumnus of Caltech and holds memberships in several prestigious institutes such as the US National Academy of Science, Academia Sinica, Chinese Academy of Science, Institute of Medicine of NAS, and National Academy of Engineering.

A Global Role of the iMechanica Is Emerging //m.limpotrade.com/node/1565 < div class = "字段field-name-taxonomy-vocabulary-6field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden">

The report about the iMechanica get-together with the McMat 2007 is definitely exciting, because we have found a community beyond the usual professional conferences we are familiar with. Besides, we may have more, if not less, common interests and languages through this coordinated and yet diversified group with thousands of members in different places of this world. It is indeed exciting to meet as friends you make from the Internet, except it is professionally:-)

In last week, I was in the ICNM 5 in Shanghai, China. Surprisingly, a few partcipants I have never met before came to me and told me that they came this conference because of my posting on this iMechanica. I am really moved because these mechanicians not only read news pieces but also pictures. Besides good memory in matching my old picture and me, they are also so nice to tell me about my contribution to this community.

This encounter reminds me that we can do more to promote and improve this community through informal get-together in similar meetings. Our friends in the McMat 2007 has done a great job and it can be easily duplicated in other events, particularly those have been advertised in the iMechanica, with our volunteers.

Another idea is that we open this site for other languages so more people, particularly students, can participate. There are more interests and news to share in countries like China. many of my friends have expressed their interests in reading and contributing.

Let us just try to generate more interests and links with the iMechanica.
