Being able to create accurate medical devices that are closely matched to a patient’s unique anatomy requires precision imaging, measurements, and design. A critical part of PrinterPrezz’s unique medifacturing™ workflow is our process of turning magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans into a 3D CAD image that can be manipulated and used for 3D printing.

PrinterPrezz employs a team of experienced orthopedic surgeons that work with innovation hospitals. MRI and CT scans can be given to us more securely and quickly, ultimately speeding up the process of producing an effective implant. In the early stages of our workflow, we utilize Synopsys’s Simpleware ScanIP. Our surgeons and engineers are able take MRI and CT scan data from the hospital and perform analysis and segmentation—effectively taking the solid scan data and slicing the structures up layer by layer. This allows us to “see into” the 3D scans and apply unique modeling techniques. It is the first critical point in the workflow.

Metal additive manufacturing enables production of complex metal parts that meet mechanical property specifications without the need for costly tooling. In addition, parts can be made in small batches or even manufactured on a “one-off” basis. Computed tomography (CT) scanning can be used to identify defects such as voids or inclusions that can occur in parts created through metal additive manufacturing, but in the past there was no way to determine how these manufacturing byproducts might affect performance. A new process has been developed to convert CT images into finite element models that can be used to predict the mechanical properties of as-manufactured parts.

Optimizing Coil Design for the Large Hadron Collider //m.limpotrade.com/node/22702 < div class = "字段field-name-taxonomy-vocabulary-6field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden">

The High Luminosity (HiLumi) upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) relies, amongst other additional upgrades, on superconducting 11 T dipole magnets for increasing the luminosity of the beam to enlarge the data sample for physics experiments. The new dipole magnets are manufactured from Nb3Sn superconducting elements that become very brittle after a very specific and necessary heat treatment during the manufacturing stage.

The microscopic superconducting elements (≈40 µm in diameter) are greatly sensitive to the stress and strain that is applied to the magnets for the final assembly and during operation within the LHC accelerator. Understanding and managing the stresses and strains originating from the macroscale down to the microscale that lead to the permanent degradation of the superconducting elements is critical to the performance of the magnets.

3D image-based modeling using Synopsys Simpleware software allows the HiLumi Project at CERN to characterize representative coil geometries to predict behavior at different scales using advanced material models. This research is enabling realistic simulations to be carried out at the strand and filament level by accounting for the global stresses of the realistic coil geometry.

This minicourse demonstrates the ease of obtaining high-quality models from 3D image data in Synopsys Simpleware™ software for use in COMSOL Multiphysics®. The workflow of processing 3D image data (e.g., from MRI, CT, Micro-CT, and FIB-SEM) to create models for life sciences, materials, and manufacturing applications will be outlined and demonstrated. Learn about Simpleware software’s capabilities for image visualization, segmentation, analysis, and model generation. Examples will also be shown of workflows and case studies combining Simpleware software and COMSOL Multiphysics®.
