Position Description:
The Materials Science and Technology Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a candidate for a postdoctoral research associate position for its materials research program supporting the testing and development of cast aluminum alloys. The selected candidate will work on the characterization and simulation of mechanical properties of cast aluminum alloys for automotive engine applications. Project will include application of integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) tools and codes for the development of alloys with improved properties compared to baseline cast aluminum alloys. The position will involve significant interaction with a large team within Oak Ridge National Laboratory and external industry partners. The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year upon satisfactory performance and continuation on funding.
Qualifications:
Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in materials science and engineering or a related field with a strong background in mechanical characterization, preferably related to cast aluminum or other lightweight alloys. Experience in modeling of mechanical properties (in particular; tensile properties, plasticity, fatigue, crack growth) is highly desirable. Knowledge of finite element modeling is a plus although not necessary. The applicant must have demonstrated abilities in problem solving, collaborative research, and excellent communication skills.
Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
Questions regarding the position can be directed to Amit Shyam at shyama@ornl.gov.

Dear iMechanica Readers,
Greetings from Oak Ridge.
I would like to invite you, your colleagues and students to attend the annual Educational Symposium organized by the Oak Ridge Chapter of ASM International. The theme for this year’s symposium is:
“Innovations in Mechanical Testing: From Molecules to Large Engineering Structures”
We have an outstanding list of speakers, which includes:
Ian Robertson (NSF) - "In situ TEM testing" (Keynote Speaker)
Markus Buehler (MIT) – "Atomistic and Molecular Mechanics"
Qian Yu (UC-Berkeley) – "In situ TEM Nanomechanics"
Roberto Ballarini (U of Minnesota) – "Mechanical Measurements with Microdevices"
Robert Wheeler (Microtesting Solutions) – "In situ SEM Micromechanics"
Nicholas Randall (CSM) – "High Temperature Nanoindentation"
Jerry Young (Boeing) – "From Atoms to Airplanes"
Kevin Hemker (Johns Hopkins) - "Strain Measurements at Nanoscale"
The symposium will be held at the Pollard Auditorium in downtown Oak Ridge on April 19, 2011. More information about the symposium can be found at the following web-site:
