The Advanced Composite Materials & Textile Researc Lab (ACMTRL) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is seeking for one PhD candidates willing to perform research in the wide field of Structures/Composite Materials. The scholarship is available for the duration of three to four years. In particular, the PhD project will involve the development of:

• Multi-scale modeling tools for the progressive failure analysis of fiber-reinforced composites;
• Manufacturing modeling tools for Polymer Matrix Composites (PMCs) with and without nanoparticles inclusions;
• Prediction and evaluations of defects in PMCs;
• Analysis of 3D printing applications.

Candidates will develop new computational models for the analysis of fiber-reinforced composites, manufacture composites laminates in the lab, and perform tests to validate the models. Candidates will also have the opportunity to work in a multicultural environment, present their work at international conferences, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.

Required skills involve interest in structures and materials and deep understanding of the Finite Element Method. Prior knowledge of programming languages such as Fortran, Python, and/or Matlab is required. Proficiency in Abaqus is preferred, Nastran and/or Ansys is also valued but not required.
