Dear Imechanicians, I hope this turns out to be useful for some of you who are interested in sharing their computer codes. We are working on a free platform, cdmHUB.org, to allow users to quickly turn your scripts into Apps connected with HPC power in the cloud. Currently, the system can easily handle Linux or Windows executables. We are developing new functionalities so that other typical scripts such as Abaqus UMATs, Python scripts, matlab scripts can also be disseminated as launchable Apps in cloud. No change of your codes is necessary. These Apps can be executed on any device connected to Internet through a broswer. Of course, you have complete control of your code and you decide who can use your code. cdmHUB also provides many functionalities such as secure groups, projects, discussion boards, blogs and wikis for real-time collaborations in a virtual environment. Supported by DARPA and industrial sponsors, we are providing cdmHUB as a free platform for all users. Our technical focus is on design and manufacturing of composites (materials featuring anisotropy and heterogeneity at length scale larger than micron). I think much of your work are relevant to this platform. To get a test of its capabilities, you can try to use your favorite device to carry out a multiscale constitutive modeling of textile composites at https://cdmhub.org/resources/texgen4sc. To understand more about this platform, please see https://cdmhub.org/resources/1246.

I am currently recruiting new PhD students to join my research group at The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester. The core focus of the group is advanced computing for engineering simulation. My research interests centre on extreme scale parallel computing, cloud computing and virtual reality simulation platforms, applied to scientific and engineering problems involving complex processes. The PhD projects I supervise involve adapting the open source software ParaFEM to solve challenging research problems of interest to the PhD student and sponsor (where applicable). Recent projects include:

The University will offer full studentships to outstanding home/EU PhD applicants in high impact research areas. Competition is high, so in practice, this really means holders of a first class degree and/or MSc with Distinction. The University's priority areas include Advanced Materials, Energy, Cancer, Industrial Biotechnology and Addressing Global Inequality, so a PhD proposal in one of these areas will rank highly for the studentship. Award holders will be supported for 3 years by:

  • A full RCUK stipend of approximately £14k per year.
  • Home/EU fees of £4k per year for registration in September 2016.
  • The stipend may be topped up with industrial sponsorship.

Funding is available for students for September 2016 registration ONLY. The closing date to apply is Friday 12th February 2016. Please send a CV, short research proposal and covering letter to lee.margetts@manchester.ac.uk. I am happy to receive enquiries before the deadline.

I thought this might be of interest for some imechanicans, particularly those who work on composites (anisotropic and/or heterogeneous materials). Sorry if it sounds a bit infomercial.

Imagine a youtube-like environment for you to deploy a cloud version of your code without any change to your original code. Your research code can be immediately shared with the global community.

Imagine a place you can find all the computer tools for composites simulation including comprehensive commercial codes like ABAQUS to research codes written by graduate students who are working on their theses.

Imagine having fingertip access to composites simulation tools anywhere, anytime, on any device including smart phones. Tools that are not java applets but real commercial codes connected to HPC resources in the cloud.

Would you have questions about results or underlining models, imagine being able to ask subject matter experts and world leading researchers 24/7 and being able to add your voice to the rest of the community.

Imagine a new way of publishing: the equations in your paper are directly connected to the computer codes in the same place so that others can easily understand and adapt your research.

Imagine going a tradeshow of composites simulation software where you can try all the potential tools at your own pace using your own problems. You won’t get just the sales pitch but can have access to all the information about the software, including reviews from others and evaluations from experts. Plus no travel is needed!

At Purdue, we are launching the Composites Design and Manufacturing HUB (cdmHUB.org). Powered by the cyberinfrastructure of HubZero, supported by the collective wisdom and knowledge of the community, and sponsored by our visionary industrial leaders, cdmHUB will:

  • Provide a single site for review of all composites simulation tools
  • Convene composites experts to establish a simulation tool maturity level (TML)
  • Identify opportunities and mechanisms for integration of simulation tools
  • Identify needs for new tool innovations
  • Support the growth and maturation of new simulation tools
  • Support data bases necessary for verification and validation of simulation tools
  • Support the development of intellectual talent in simulation tool use and new tool development
  • Facilitate pervasive and accelerated learning of composites
  • Establish and promote “Best Practices” for composites simulation tools

All you need is a web browser connected to cdmHUB.org. As we are still in development stage, any of your comments will be greatly appreciated and help guide the future of cdmHUB. Please provide your feedbacks either here or through cdmHUB.org.

Survey of Computing Platforms for Engineering Simulation https://万博manbetx平台m.limpotrade.com/node/17299 < div class = "字段field-name-taxonomy-vocabulary-8field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden">

How many organisations are using Cloud Computing? Is the use of High Performance Technical Computing in engineering simulation set to grow in the next 5 years? Will Tablet PCs be powerful enough to run my application? What do my peers think?

These are typical questions asked by the engineering simulation community. Wouldn't it be great if we could take a snapshot of the type of computing platform we're using today and also predict where we will be in the next 5 years?

To give us a better picture, NAFEMS and EESI have put together a short survey. It will take around 5 minutes to complete and as a participant, you will be able to sign up to receive an electronic copy of the results.

Please click here to complete the survey.

有限元分析UMATs https://万博manbetx平台m.limpotrade.com/node/9493 < div class = "字段field-name-taxonomy-vocabulary-8field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden">

I have funding for software development to provide a UMAT interface in the parallel versions of the code from Smith I.M. and Griffiths D.V. "Programming the Finite Element Method", 4th Edition, Wiley, 2004.

I would be interested to hear about any open source UMATs available for download. I'd also like to hear from anyone who might like to use their closed source UMATs in a parallel environment.

The funding has been awarded by the UK National HPC Service HECToR to encourage the greater use of HECToR for Structural Engineering.

The project runs from 1 December 2010 to 30 November 2011. Further details can be found at http://tinyurl.com/23favxu

NAFEMS Workshop on HPC in Engineering Simulation https://万博manbetx平台m.limpotrade.com/node/9491 < div class = "字段field-name-taxonomy-vocabulary-6field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden">

NAFEMS will be holding a special workshop titled "High Performance Computing for Engineering Simulation". This workshop is part of the biennial NAFEMS World Congress (http://www.nafems.org/congress) being held in Boston USA from 23-26 May 2011. The aim of the workshop is to promote discussion about the changing HPC landscape. Participants will include the users of engineering simulation software, those that develop it and those who provide the underlying hardware infrastructure.

NAFEMS is the international association for engineering simulation. It has a large international membership, spanning more than 950 organizations, from engineering companies and technology vendors to academia. NAFEMS provides an independent forum for developing and promoting best practice in engineering simulation. It achieves this by hosting technical working groups, regional groups and organizing awareness seminars and conferences.

In recent years, NAFEMS members have shown a growing interest in HPC. This is due to the rapidly changing technology landscape. Simulation professionals can now chose between various technologies including multicore processors, graphics processing units, grid computing and cloud computing. Members have many concerns including (i) Will my type of problem run more quickly using HPC? (ii) What type of hardware should I buy? (iii) How do I buy compute access as a service? (iv) What are the software licensing issues? (v) Is my data safe on the grid or cloud? (vi) Can my company access academic supercomputing facilities?

Encouraging a wider uptake of HPC in engineering simulation needs a many-way dialogue between potential users, software vendors, hardware vendors and service providers. The NAFEMS "High Performance Computing for Engineering Simulation" workshop will provide an independent forum for exchanging ideas that will benefit all those who participate.

If you would like to be involved, please contact Dr Lee Margetts (lee.margetts@manchester.ac.uk) at the University of Manchester for further details. The NAFEMS World Congress also provides exhibition space and opportunities for sponsorship. Details of these can be obtained from Roger Oswald (roger.oswald@nafems.org), Conference Organizer.
