There are two open Ph.D. positions in the MCMB Lab starting in the Spring term of the academic year 2022-2023, or in the Fall term of the academic year 2023-2024. One of these positions is in design optimization, and another position is in the fracture analysis of engineering/biological composites. Qualified candidates must have:

  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical engineering or related background
  • Strong interest in computational mechanics
  • Strong interest in design optimization or fracture mechanics
  • Strong computational, analytical, and mathematical modeling skills
  • Proficiency in programming (C/C++, Python, or MATLAB)
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills
  • An ability to work collaboratively with group members, collaborators, and industrial partners

In addition, experience in design optimization, fracture analysis, and programming in high-performance computing (HPC) environments is a big plus. For more information regarding our work in optimization, see these research pages: [1] and [2]. For information regarding our work in fracture analysis, see this page: [3].

To apply for this position, please contact the PI, Dr. Ahmad R. Najafi (arn55@drexel.edu). In the email, indicate which position you are applying for (optimization or fracture) and include your CV, transcripts, and one-page cover letter describing past project experience, research interest, and future career goals.

Research Associate in Computational Design Optimization

University of Sheffield - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Civil and Structural Engineering

Are you interested in developing innovative digital methods that enable the design of more resource efficient building structures? We have a great opportunity for someone with expertise in optimization methods to undertake research in support of projects that involve the design of optimized structural elements such as beams, slabs and trusses, taking advantage of modern additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques.

You will support the EU Horizon 2020 funded ‘Integradde’ project, the overall aim of which is to develop a robust end-to-end digital workflow for the design and production of large metal parts produced via 3D printing / additive manufacturing. As part of this workflow structural optimization methods will be used to automatically identify efficient distributions of material, minimising build time and/or the amount of material required. You will focus on developing computational algorithms to design large parts tailored for production via direct energy deposition additive manufacturing processes, and programming these in software libraries compatible with the adopted tools and digital workflow.

Secondly, you will support a project being undertaken in collaboration with the innovative engineering company MetLase, which seeks to develop a digital workflow for the design and production of reinforced concrete elements incorporating laser-cut steel reinforcement

For both projects the aim is to fabricate and load test a selection of optimized designs, which will require you to gain familiarity with specialist manufacturing software and to actively engage with technical personnel.

You will be primarily based within the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, which has a long track record of developing innovative methods in the field of structural optimization, but will work closely with colleagues based in other Departments in the University and at LimitState Ltd. You will also collaborate closely with project partners based at partner organisations in the Integradde consortium, located across Europe.

We are seeking candidates with a PhD in engineering or a related subject area. As this role involves the development and application of mathematical optimization methods, you will also need to have relevant experience in this area.

Closing date:

The closing date for receipt of applications is Friday, 16th July 2021.
