In reply to Speech of Acceptance of the 2015 Timoshenko Medal by Michael Ortiz
Prof. Ortiz was on my Ph.D. committee at Caltech in 2001. I recall he is very friendly to his graduate students and other students like me. Also, he is very energetic because his group often has 20 persons including post-doc and visitors (very diverse group including many women and international students). He tried to talk to everyone and answer research questions.
His graduate student Rena Yu simulated my dynamic failure experiments. During her Ph.D. thesis defense, I asked a silly question: your simulation didn’t match my experiments on edge delamination of layered materials. Rena felt it’s hard to answer. Prof. Ortiz said our simulation does not need to match all your experiments. This is what we get now. After 5 years, one faculty simulated my new experiments, he said he can simulate the exact results you wanted (e.g., my experimental results). Based on these two cases, I really admire Prof. Ortiz’s great scientific research ethics.

Brilliant speech and very well deserved medal.
On one hand, as an early career researcher one must undoubtedly acknowledge Prof. Ortiz's concerns and claims towards the removal of mobility barriers and the support of stable academic careers.
On the other hand, being aware that we are facing an exceptionally bright case, as a Spanish mechanician is greatly inspiring to see that a former student of one of our universities (or factories of "elite engineering corps", using his own words) has achieved such levels of recognition.
I make use of imechanica to congratulate him one more time and I eagerly look forward to reading his novel work on data-driven computational mechanics (his lecture at COMPLAS XIII left me both puzzled and fascinated!).

Is there a video for such a delightful talk ?
A sincrere congratulation to Michael again! The speech is very inspiring in many aspects.
